Summer and Winter are prime examples of the seasonal canvases that so many Hudson River School artists enjoyed painting. In Winter, Loveridge depicts figures as they ice skate on a frozen body of water. He creates a beautiful atmosphere as the snow reflects the colors of the dramatic winter sky. A meandering fence provides a horizontal contrast to the scattered frozen trees of the composition. In Summer, the artist shows quite a contrast in the depiction of the lush foliage of the landscape. He is attentive to the varied reflections of color in the water and the ripples that the cows create as they graze there. He captures the warm and tranquil quality of a warm summer’s day.
