Moran most likely painted Lady Sewing during his time in Paris, or shortly after. Here, he captures a woman going about her daily chores, mending one her dresses in her family’s sitting room. She wears a day dress, as befitting the time and occasion, but it is still elegant—a shimmering blue material with ruffles on the sleeves. The interiority of her mood is emphasized by her surroundings; she feels warmly enclosed in her sitting room with an animal skin rug under her feet and a fire burning nearby, as well as what appears to be family portraits hanging behind her.
