Edith Alice Scott was born in 1877 in Malden, Massachusetts to Mary F. Dorety and William Scott, a manufacturer of machine tools. She was educated at local public schools including Medford’s Washington Grammar where she graduated in 1892. She received her high school diploma from the Edward Everett School in Boston in 1895.
Scott began her formal artistic training at the Boston Museum School in 1897 where she studied under Edmund Tarbell, Frank W. Benson and Philip Leslie Hale. She received a diploma in the Life Class in 1901. Scott continued her studies at the school receiving an honorable mention for the Sears Prize in the Portrait Class in 1902, and an honorable mention for the Ayer Prize in 1904.
