Edith Alice Scott was born in 1877 in Malden, Massachusetts to Mary F. Dorety and William Scott, a manufacturer of machine tools. She was educated at local public schools including Medford’s Washington Grammar where she graduated in 1892.[1] She received her high school diploma from the Edward Everett School in Boston in 1895.[2]

Scott began her formal artistic training at the Boston Museum School in 1897 where she studied under Edmund Tarbell, Frank W. Benson and Philip Leslie Hale. She received a diploma in the Life Class in 1901.[3] Scott continued her studies at the school receiving an honorable mention for the Sears Prize in the Portrait Class in 1902[4], and an honorable mention for the Ayer Prize in 1904.[5]
