Seascape View from the Shore at Sunset is likely one of the scenes Wiles painted during his summer painting trips through popular points in New England. Dated 1864, shortly after Wiles had settled into his Astor place studio, it was most likely executed on one of his summer ventures to points east—specifically, to Narragansett, Rhode Island, as is indicated on the painting's stretcher. With a luminous sky painted in warm hues of yellow and pink, the meticulous faithfulness of the composition indicates much about Wiles's Hudson River School training.
