Depicted against a draped gray sheet, Peabody’s flowers and vase possess a refined dignity. The artist skillfully portrays the glass vase’s iridescence with layers of blue and purple brushstrokes highlighted with splashes of white. The dark blue flowers, by contrast, suggest the passage of time as they tumble down, their petals and stems depicted with a tangle of heavy, textural brushstrokes, which is further emphasized by the sweeping gestures that describe the background. The artist communicates a complexity of sentiments through her simple still life arrangement by applying the color and line theories that she had embraced in her abstract work from the 1930s and 1940s, a wonderful hybrid of advanced technique and traditional subject matter.
