Alicia M. Keyes was a painter as well as art teacher and lecturer. She was born in Concord, Massachusetts on June 13, 1855. She was the daughter of John Shepard Keyes and Martha Lawrence Prescott Keyes and sister of Annie S. Keyes (Mrs. Edward Waldo Emerson), Florence Keyes (Mrs. Charles Walcott), and Prescott Keyes. When the Keyes family lived in Boston in the winter of 1862 (during the tenure of John Shepard Keyes as U.S. Marshal), Alicia lived with the Emersons, under the particular care of Ellen Emerson.
