Anna Lea Merrit was born in Philadelphia. She studied anatomy at the Women's Medical College in Philadelphia before moving to Europe with her family in 1865. There, she studied art in Italy, Germany and Paris before settling in England, where she became a student of and eventually married Henry Merritt. Anna Lea Merritt produced a remarkable group of portraits that are in many public collections and had a long and successful career as both an artist and author.
