Hallie Elizabeth Champlin was born in 1880 in St. Louis, Missouri to Susan Isabella Champlin and Henry Clay Champlin, a grain dealer. By the turn of the century the family had moved to the South Side of Chicago. Champlin studied at the Art institute of Chicago and later at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. A talented artist and athlete, Champlin was a member of the Chicago Country Club and traveled around the country competing in tennis tournaments. Her sister Ada Belle Champlin (1875-1950), was also an artist.
