(New York, NY) Hawthorne Fine Art is pleased to announce A Family Discovery: Works from the Estates of Julie Hart Beers (1835-1913) and Marion “Minnie” Robertson Beers Brush (1853-1945). The intimate online exhibition and sale, on view October 15, 2024 – January 1, 2025, will feature works by Julie Hart Beers (1835-1913), one of America’s first professional women landscape painters, and her talented daughter Marion “Minnie” Robertson Beers Brush (1853-1945). The oil paintings recently came to light after being found tucked away in a closet of a descendant’s home. The title of the exhibition refers to the discovery of these works as well as the rediscovery of Marion Brush, an exceptional artist in her own right who is little known today compared to her mother, and her uncles William and James McDougal Hart.

Among the works to be shown is Fishing near a Cascade, 1869, by Julie Hart Beers. Painted in oil on board, the small-scale work depicts a solitary figure fishing from the rocky bank of a mountain stream. In the middle-distance water falls over a rock face creating gentle rapids as it rushes downstream. The artist’s careful study of nature is highlighted in Ferns Along Water’s Edge and Forest Interior with Rivulet, 1870. The closely cropped compositions offer intimate views of the ferns, thick undergrowth, and rocky terrain of a forest interior. A rare still life by the artist titled Still Life with Bottle, Glass, and Pipe is also included.

Marion “Minnie” Robertson Beers Brush, the daughter of Julie Hart Beers and niece of Hudson River School painters William and James McDougal Hart is represented by Woodland Interior with Cascade. The work reveals the influence of the artist’s mother in the lush vegetation and gentle flow of water over rocks, as well as their shared love of nature. Well-known among her contemporaries for her floral works, Brush is also represented by Wildflower Meadow Beside a Stream, Garden Path, and Hollyhocks along a Garden Path. While little-known today, Brush exhibited with the Brooklyn Art Association and the American Watercolor Society. She exhibited with many prominent artists of the day, including her mother, at the Brooklyn Art Association (1874), at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition (1875) and the Inter-State Industrial Exposition of Chicago (1877).
