Carolyn Mase (1858-1948): Estate of an Impressionist Master

(New York, NY) Hawthorne Fine Art is pleased to announce Carolyn Campbell Mase (1858-1948): Estate of an Impressionist Master. The online exhibition and sale, on view October 15, 2025 – January 1, 2026, will feature works by American Impressionist Carolyn Campbell Mase (1858-1948). A student of John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902), Mase was an active member of the Cos Cob Art Colony and a founding member of the Greenwich Art Society. The exhibition will include twenty works by Mase in oil, watercolor, and pastel and will include landscapes, marine scenes, and figurative works.
A New York native, Mase was born and raised in the Hudson Valley in the area we know today as Beacon. She studied at the Art Students’ League with Twachtman and for two years in Paris. She exhibited widely including with the Connecticut Academy of the Fine Arts, National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Staten Island Museum, the 1913 Armory Show and the John Herron Art Institute, among others.
Twachtman’s influence is apparent in works including Waterfall, Greenwich, CT. Mase worked in pastels to capture Horseneck Falls, a small waterfall on Twachtman’s Greenwich property. Twachtman’s house, sparsely rendered in strokes of white, can be seen in the distance. Twachtman featured the falls and the surrounding landscape in many of his own paintings. In works such as Mountain Landscape and Landscape with Church Mase captured the early spring season using delicate strokes of pastel on paper to delineate the essential characteristics of the landscape.
Mase often depicted the river views from her Staten Island neighborhood and traveled to beach and harbor towns from New Jersey to Maine seeking out inspiration. Mase’s watercolors Boats in the Harbor and Boats at the Dock recall the Gloucester scenes of her teacher. Likely painted in Ogunquit, Maine, where she spent several summers, Mase’s oil paintings Rocky Coast and Crashing Waves depict a focused view of the tides and waves as they break against the rocks.
Two variations of Portrait of a Woman in a Patterned Skirt, one in graphite on canvas and one in watercolor provide insight into Mase’s process and her exploration of various artistic media.
