- Newell specialized in expressive renderings of animals, where his subjects are imbued with vitality and individual personality through their subtle gestures and facial expressions.Newell’s animals are situated in peaceful landscapes, but he enlivened the quiet settings through his brushwork, which became more loose and dynamic as his career progressed. A reviewer in Academy Notes in 1908 commented that Newell's works were painted in a "broad and vigorous manner." He preferred to paint directly from nature. Though Newell gradually adopted a looser style and began applying his paint thickly, sometimes with a palette knife, he never embraced the fragmentary brushwork and broken colors popularized by the Impressionists.
